As the Prince of the Spanish language, our national poet Ruben Dario, said: “Youth, divine treasure, already you go not to return!” If youth is only a short step that without us noticing passes right before our eyes, then in the moment that young men and women take the power to change their conditions and quality of life, they help others, and others join in this change, and in this way we build a different society with the participation of the citizens, with collective decisions, objectives and common benefits.
The youth has shown that throughout history they possess power to organise change, in the search of social change, equality of gender, social justice, active citizenship and human rights. The youth that forms the great network of Progressio ICS is not an exception, working with rural communities to empower youths from these communities.
On arriving to a rural community such as this, in this case in Nicaragua, and speaking with young women with many talents and who do a little of everything, you find that access to education is limited a lot of the time to primary level, but the women manage to find a way to learn. You can find women who make shoes, clothes, ornaments, crafts, farmers, cattle breeders, saleswomen or shopkeepers, or with an innate talent in the culinary arts that leaves everyone with a greater desire to try more Nicaraguan food.
To have this immense amount of human talent and not to use it is to lose the potential of women; therefore, awareness raising activities in favour of raising awareness of their rights and entrepreneurial workshops, are the keys to development in these communities.
The biggest step to achieve social transformation starts with ourselves, both men and women. Our learning activities, for volunteers of both genders, must cover subjects such as gender equality, active citizenship, activism, and cyberactivism and through these activities we will be able to learn more about of our rights and how to pass on these teachings in an easy and even fun way.
In the recent ‘Mid-term’ evaluation, we ran an activism workshop in which we learned to make a chorus, street theatre, and cyberactivism, amongst other things. With these same tools, we will implement an awareness raising campaign in the community we are working in.
Pope Francis has been noted recently as being a defender of human rights, of the most deprived communities, of ethnic communities, and has made a call to the youth to participate in the political process, advising men and women that “to go against the tide, when they want to rob you of your hopes”. The hope of being free, of having rights, of having basic services, confirms that youth is “the window through which enters the future of the world.”
We are convinced that we are in unity with our Progressio family to reach the places of power that belong to us, and we men and women have earned with our effort the right to share our ideas, ideals, knowledge and work in our countries.
Youth has always been marked with fighting, defending rights, unionism, cooperative movement, hope, the battle for a better country or world has been drawn with the trajectory of slogans, poems, verses, petitions, songs and wishes of a better world since the 1970s. The excellent Chilean composer Violeta Parra and the singer-songwriter Argentinean Mercedes Sosa released a beautiful song about the student community, in the age where they listened to their radios and they recorded on their cassettes the infectious topic interpreted by Los Guaraguao (a Venezuelan band): “Cheers to our students, garden of our happiness, they are birds that don’t get scared”. We can observe that the student protests of this age were marked by confrontation with the police and the governments, fighting for their rights and not just in Nicaragua, but in other countries they also fought for their sovereignty, democracy, liberty, and human rights.
With all this in mind, we can finally understand that this fight is not a recent phenomenon, but has been going on for years and it is the moment for you to join in. The hour arrives in which we unite forces and we activate ourselves, and while the journey is long and only with unity will we achieve the goal, we men and women have the power to change our world.

La juventud empoderada de Nicaragua con Progressio ICS
A como decía el príncipe de las letras castellanas, nuestro poeta Nicaragüense Rubén Darío, "Juventud, divino tesoro, ¡ya te vas para no volver!" . Sí la juventud es solo un paso corto que sin darnos cuenta pasa justo frente a nuestros ojos, entonces es el momento que hombres y mujeres jóvenes tomen el poder de cambiar sus condiciones y calidad de vida, ayuden a que otras y otros se unan al cambio y de esta manera construyamos una sociedad diferente con participación ciudadana, decisiones en colectivo con objetivos y beneficios en común.
La juventud ha mostrado a través de la historia, el poder que posee organizada, en la búsqueda de un cambio social, equidad de género, justicia social, participación ciudadana y respeto humano. La juventud que forma la gran Red de Progressio ICS no es la excepción, trabajando con comunidades de las zonas rurales busca que la juventud de estos sectores de la sociedad se empodere.
Llegar a una comunidad de las zonas rurales en este caso en Nicaragua, hablar con las mujeres jóvenes que son multifacéticas y hacen de todo un poco, el acceso a la educación es limitado muchas veces a la primaria, pero las mujeres se las ingenian para aprender, encontrás mujeres que hacen zapatos, ropa, adornos, artesanías, agricultoras, ganaderas, vendedoras, o con un talento nato en arte culinario que deja a cualquiera con deseos de probar más comida Nicaragüense.
Tener todo ese talento humano y no usarlo es perder el potencial de las mujeres así que actividades de concientización en pro de mostrar cuáles son sus derechos y talleres de emprendedurismo son la clave del desarrollo de estas comunidades.
El paso más grande para tener transformación social empieza con nosotras y nosotros mismos por eso en las actividades de aprendizaje para las y los voluntarios no pueden faltar los temas de equidad de género, participación ciudadana, activismo, ciberactivismo con los cuales logramos aprender un poco más de nuestros derechos y como transmitirlos de una manera fácil y hasta divertida.
En la reciente evaluación de medio termino logramos hacer un taller de activismo con el cual aprendimos a hacer coro, teatro callejero, ciberactivismo; mismo que implementaremos en la concientización de la comunidad en la que estamos trabajando.
El Papa Francisco, quien últimamente se ha hecho notar como un defensor de los derechos humanos, de las comunidades más desposeídas, comunidades étnicas, ha hecho un llamado a la juventud a participar en procesos políticos, aconseja a hombres y mujeres a "ir contra corriente, cuando te quieren robar la esperanza". La esperanza de ser libre, de tener derechos, de tener servicios básicos, afirma que la juventud es "la ventana por la que entra el futuro al mundo".
Convencidas y convencidos de la afirmación estamos en unidad con la gran familia Progressio para alcanzar los lugares de poder que nos corresponde y que nos hemos ganado con esfuerzo hombres y mujeres que día a día aportamos a nuestros países ideas, ideales, conocimientos y trabajo.
La juventud ha estado marcada por la lucha, defensa de derechos, sindicalismo, cooperativismo, esperanza, la batalla por un país o un mundo mejor ha trazado su trayectoria con consignas, poemas, versos, demandas, canciones y deseos de un mundo mejor allá por los años 70. La excelente compositora chilena Violeta Parra y la cantautora argentina Mercedes Sosa, dieron a conocer una hermosa canción sobre la comunidad estudiantil, en la época se escuchaba en las radios y se grababa en un cassette tradicional el contagioso tema interpretado por Los Guaraguao, “Que vivan los estudiantes jardín de nuestra alegría, son aves que no se asustan." Podemos notar, que las luchas estudiantiles de esos años, estuvieron marcadas por el enfrentamiento policial con los gobiernos de la época y luchaban por sus derechos y no solo Nicaragua países hermanos también luchaban por alcanzar soberanía, democracia, libertad, respeto de sus derechos.
Con lo antes relatado podemos darnos cuenta que la lucha no es de hace unos días, lleva años y es momento que vos también te unas, llego la hora de unir fuerzas y activarnos, el camino es largo y solo con la unidad se llegara a la meta, hombres y mujeres tenemos el poder de cambiar nuestro mundo.
