As part of our work in the community we wanted to raise the awareness of recycling at the school of La Sabanita. As around the community there is quite a lot of litter, including plastic bottles. With the recycling facility now in place at the school thanks to the last cycle of ICS volunteers, it is important to get the message across to the children that empty plastic bottles can be put to better use when disposed of in the recycling facility. The idea of a recycling competition was proposed to help get this message across to the children who would hopefully also carry the message back home as well.

First, let me introduce “Señor Botella” (Mr.Bottle), who needs some help with recycling bottles or our recycling mascot you could say! On Tuesday Señor Botella and his helpers went round to all the morning classes and initially spoke with the children about what they knew about recycling, the negative impacts of littering and then introduced the competition. Señor Botella asked the different classes to collect as many plastic bottles as they could by the end of next week and this got the children excited. The class collecting the highest number of bottles would win a prize. It was nice to see that the children weren’t just interested in the prize but also keen to talk actively about recycling. Overall, it was a very positive reaction with lots of hands going up in response to recycling questions and all hands going up to whether they would participate in the competition.  We left to cries of “Adios Señor Botella” and plenty of waves.

Later that week, we went back to school to see how they were getting on and were thrilled to see that they had already collected multiple sacks of bottles per classroom! It seems that maybe an overall prize is deserved as well for all the effort that’s been put in by everyone.
