We are three weeks away from the end of cycle 10 and the eco-latrines have already been completely covered. It has taken three complete cycles to make this possible, but finally 60 eco-latrines have been constructed and covered, by a total of nearly 80 volunteers, both from the UK and Nicaragua, throughout the last nine months. Finalising a stage of a project makes you feel great and you value the work you have achieved as a team, not only with your current cycle of volunteers but also those that came before.
Throughout these months of construction the volunteers had the opportunity to learn new skills relating to construction and carpentry. They have also been able to work hand-in-hand with the local community, spending whole days with them while constructing, covering eco-latrines, having banter, sharing food, anecdotes and culture. Let’s not forget the fun awareness raising sessions, in which more than one person made a joke of the fact they would use their own faeces as compost. I am sure that all the volunteers who have seen the eco-latrines first hand know what I’m talking about, and for those that don’t there are still eco-latrines waiting to be built elsewhere.
Luckily it isn’t over yet, we still have a few weeks left and we already have playground designs in place for the children at the schools of El Pochote and Monimbo. The playgrounds are going to be constructed from recycled materials, as such we hope to raise awareness of the positive ways in which waste materials can be used to make a contribution to the community. These materials include car tyres, tree branches, bamboo and plastic bottles, among others. With a lot of creativity, and some paint, we will create safe, fun and colourful spaces in the schools for the children to enjoy whilst learning about the importance of recycling. This all goes alongside workshops and games related to recycling that the volunteers of this cycle have been running for the last couple of weeks.

Nicaragua: A caballo entre Eco-letrinas y centros de recreo
Estamos a tres semanas de terminar el ciclo 10 y las eco-letrinas ya han sido cubiertas en su totalidad. Han sido tres ciclos completos para hacer esto posible, pero finalmente 60 eco-letrinas han sido construidas y cubiertas, por nada más y nada menos que alrededor de 80 voluntarios entre Británicos y nacionales durante los últimos nueve meses. Concluir una etapa de un proyecto te hace sentir muy bien y te hace valorar el trabajo en equipo que se realiza no solo con los actuales voluntarios, sino con los que un día estuvieron aquí.
En estos meses de construcción los voluntarios tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender nuevas habilidades en temas de construcción y carpintería, también pudieron trabajar mano a mano con la comunidad local, pasando días enteros con ellos durante el proceso tanto de construcción como de cubierta, además de echarse unas risas y compartir comida, anécdotas y cultura. Sin olvidar las divertidas charlas de concientización, en las que más de uno bromeaba por el hecho de usar sus heces como abono. Estoy seguro que todos los voluntarios que han pasado por estas eco-letrinas saben de lo que hablo y para los que no, aún quedan muchas eco-letrinas que construir en otras partes.
Por suerte no todo termina aquí, aún nos quedan unas semanas y ya tenemos diseñados los centro de recreo para los niños y niñas de las escuelas del Pochote y Monimbó. Básicamente se trata de unos centros de recreo que serán construidos a partir de material reciclado, para de esta manera concientizar del buen uso que los materiales desechados aún pueden aportar a la comunidad, tales como llantas de coche, ramas de madera, palos de bambú y botellas de plástico entre otros, que con mucha creatividad y algunas manos de pintura le proporcionaran a las escuelas un espacio seguro, divertido y colorido en el que los niños y niñas podrán disfrutar y valorar la importancia del reciclaje, junto a talleres y juegos relacionados con el tema que los voluntarios del ciclo ya están realizando desde hace un par de semanas.
