Our work in Haiti

A street in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake.

A key focus of our work in the Dominican Republic has been to promote rights and help build livelihoods for people of Haitian descent living in the Dominican Republic. We have supported local and international campaigns for changes in the nationality rules for Haitian-Dominicans. And we have supported partner organisations providing services to Haitian-Dominicans, particularly those working the DR/Haiti border area.

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010, our staff and development workers played a key role in the Ayuda a Haiti (Help Haiti) platform of organisations. We helped to coordinate the relief efforts from Santo Domingo (the capital of the Dominican Republic) and many of our development workers Went to Port-au-Princee to help deliver emergency aid in the aftermath of the earthquake.

We plan to be with the people of Haiti in the long term, helping them rebuild their lives and communities. Many of our development workers managed through our office in the DR are already working with Haitian partner organisations, and we aim to increase our involvement in working with Haiti's people as they meet the challenges of reconstruction and development following the earthquake.
