Filming tips

Before you start making your film, you need to decide on:

  • Length - how long will your edited film be?
  • Format - how are you going to film it?
  • Editing - How will you edit your film? Have you got access to editing software such as, Windows MovieMaker, Media 100, Adobe Premiere or iMovie?
  • Permission - get the permission of anyone you film.

While filming, you need to think about:

  • Tripod - when your film is projected on a screen, any jerky movements will be magnified.  Use of a tripod is recommended where possible.
  • Lighting - Film outside where you can, as it will save the need for complicated lighting.
  • Audio - Good clear audio is essential, do monitor the audio levels of what you are filming to check that they remain at a constant level. Use an extra mike if necessary, but make sure it remains out of shot.
  • Aspect Ratio -  Film in 4:3 ratio

Make your film as visually active and lively as possible, by using different film styles:

  • Establishing shots - film the school sign or the name of the place you are filming in.
  • Angle - vary the angle that interviews are shot at so that you have a variety of interesting shots, e.g. from left/right or straight on, high/low angles.
  • Shots - vary the types of shot you use, e.g. close up/medium and long shot (from a distance).
  • Interviews - ask questions which will highlight anything interesting, fun or amazing ideas.
  • Interesting shots/cutaways - such as shots of props used, close up shots of people's hands doing something, wide shots of scenery that you are filming in.

Good luck and happy filming!
