Heart speaks to heart: Preston 6th formers get active for Timor (24 Nov 2008)Cardinal Newman College, Preston, celebrated its annual Newman Day last week by taking all the students off timetable and inviting more than a dozen speakers, workshop leaders and organisations to help the students get thinking about the world and their place in it. Workshops and talks from the Xaverians, Church Action on Poverty, CAFOD, mime artist Steve Murray, the Prison Service, and a local Fairtrade group were coupled with fundraising activities and a lunchtime Mass. Progressio was there too, and Brie O'Keefe delivered a workshop based on Progressio's latest campaign, East Timor: Who Cares? The workshop featured an 11-image photo exhibition with accompanying reflections and a campaign action. Young people heard about the history of East Timor, its troubled past and uncertain future. With the help of some powerful images and an Australian news programme, the reality of life in East Timor and the need for justice were clear. Find out more about the Progressio campaign here |
