Progressio ICS (International Citizen Service) is a development programme for UK young adults and those from developing countries, who volunteer communities that are in the most need of change.
I wanted to take part in the programme and join a team of volunteers to help the community to bring about some change, and I was selected to take part.
To be honest, I never imagined that Progressio could bring about so many changes in each of the communities it worked with.
When I took part in the programme, I volunteered with the community of La Sabanita. Progressio promotes team work. We were a team of Nicaraguan and British volunteers, where each had a counterpart, with the same amount of work, tasked with the execution of two projects in La Sabanita.
In order for us to get to know one another, we started exchanging words in both languages, we got to know about each other’s cultures, we exchanged ideas, worked together and we designed the plans with the activities to carry out in the community.
Every day, Monday to Friday, we travelled from Masaya together, by bus, to the La Sabanita community. We carried the materials, collected old tyres, plastic bottles, etc, all that was needed for us to carry out our projects. We were tasked with building a recycling centre so that the people in the community could learn how to recycle and collect rubbish and separate it (plastic, glass and organic materials). We built the recycling centre and placed bins made of old tyres (and other recycled materials) around key public spaces so the community can use them.
At the same time that we were building the recycling centre, we were asked to raise the awareness of the students attending the local school in La Sabanita on environmental issues, how to prevent contamination and look after our planet and the need to plant trees. As I was teaching I was also learning, as we had to research on all these subjects in order to deliver accurate information to the students. For each activity, we also motivated them to collect bottles that they found in the street or in the school, so they could dispose of them in the recycling centre. In this way, they could also generate income for the school by selling the bottles, which would then benefit them.
On a personal level, Progressio taught me how to work in a team, as this was one the things that I most detested at the beginning of my placement. However, as I started working with the other fellow volunteers, I enjoyed sharing ideas and learning from a different culture. I learnt to care for the environment, not to waste water unnecessarily. I learnt to value every small thing that happens to me, to share each piece of knowledge that I acquire, so to live in a better planet and to put it into practice. I learnt that you can have friendships with people from other countries regardless of their culture, regardless of their language, and that together with them we can bring about changes that can be seen, so we can live in a better world.
While I was volunteering, I finished my Degree in Business. On that day, I could not volunteer as I had to do my final exam, but I feel proud. It has been one of my biggest joys to be able to graduate and at the same time help other people to bring about changes that, although small, are very valuable.
Since then, I have taught my brothers and my friends not to throw rubbish in the street, to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or when showering, and to plant trees.
I am taking part in a challenge that the bank I work for (Bancentro) has been promoting. They opened a bank account to fundraise until December. The challenge is that all employees save money and create a fund. In the end the one who plants the most trees will win the money, which will be deposited in a savings account. This initiative has generated the participation of my colleagues. On a personal level, I have involved my brothers, so that they plant as many trees as we can in our neighbourhood.
I can say that ICS has drastically changed my life, because before I did not take care of the environment, I did not care about where I threw my rubbish, I did not plant even one tree, nor did I water them. Worst of all, I did not bother to learn about environmental issues.
Now, I do. I like to read, to learn, to raise people’s awareness about the importance of looking after the planet. I like to see trees, to water them, to plant them, although I don’t have a lot of time, but still I do it, even if it is just a couple of minutes looking after those little plants.
Aside from giving me all this knowledge, Progressio ICS gave me several friendships with whom I remain in touch.

El impacto de Progressio ICS en mi vida personal
Progressio ICS (International Citizen Service) es un programa de desarrollo que reúne a jóvenes del Reino Unido y de los países en vías desarrollo para ofrecerse como voluntario en algunas de las comunidades donde tienen mayor necesidad de cambios.
Opté por entrar al grupo con la intención de ayudar en la comunidad para lograr un poco de cambio y fui seleccionada para los proyectos a ejecutarse.
Para ser sincera no me imaginaba que Progressio realizara tantos cambios en cada comunidad donde llegaba.
Cuando trabajé como voluntaria fue para la comunidad de La Sabanita. Progressio se caracteriza por promover el trabajo en equipo, éramos un grupo nicas y un grupo británicos donde nos dividieron en partes iguales, un nica con un británico para ejecutar dos proyectos que se llevarían a cabo en La Sabanita.
Para conocernos mejor, iniciamos a intercambiar palabras, conocimos un poco acerca de la cultura de ambas nacionalidades, intercambiamos ideas, trabajamos juntos y elaboramos los planes con las actividades que realizaríamos en la comunidad.
Todos los días de lunes a viernes nos íbamos juntos en un bus a la comunidad de La Sabanita desde Masaya, trasladábamos los materiales que ocuparíamos, recolectamos llantas, botellas de plástico, en fin, todo lo necesario para poder ejecutar nuestros proyectos, los cuales eran hacer un centro de reciclaje para que las personas aprendieran técnicas de cómo reciclar y recolectar la basura de forma clasificada (plástico, vidrio, orgánica). Construimos el Centro de Reciclaje y puestos comunitarios con las llantas que habíamos recolectado, piedras, etc.
Al mismo tiempo que construíamos nos dieron la tarea de instruir a los niños de la escuela de La Sabanita acerca del medio ambiente, de cómo prevenir la contaminación, de cómo poder salvar nuestro planeta, a tener la costumbre de plantar árboles. Al mismo tiempo que enseñaba yo también iba aprendiendo ya que fueron temas que investigamos para poder dar charlas verídicas. También los motivamos a llevar en cada actividad botellas que encontraban en las calles o en la escuela y que las depositaran en el centro de reciclaje. De esta manera podían recolectar muchas botellas para que las pudieran vender y así generar dinero para la escuela y utilizarlos en beneficio de los mismos estudiantes.
En lo personal Progressio me enseñó a trabajar en equipo ya que era una de las cosas que más detestaba al iniciar mi emplazamiento, pero a medida que iba trabajando con los chicos me encantó compartir ideas y aprender de otra cultura. Aprendí como cuidar mi planeta, a no seguir desperdiciando agua sino había necesidad de hacerlo, a valorar cada pequeña cosa que me va sucediendo, a compartir cada pequeño conocimiento que adquiero para vivir en un planeta mejor y a ponerlo en práctica. Me enseño que se puede tener amistades de otros países no importando la cultura, ni el idioma, y que junto a esas personas podemos lograr cambios que verdaderamente se hagan ver para vivir en un mundo mejor.
Puedo decir que estando de voluntaria me gradué en mi carrera de Licenciada en Mercadotecnia. Para ese día no pude asistir a la comunidad ya que me tocaba la defensa de mi título, pero me siento muy orgullosa, fue una de mis mayores alegrías, poder graduarme y estar ayudando a otras personas a realizar cambios que, aunque sean pequeños valen mucho.
Actualmente he enseñado a mis hermanos y a mis amigos la costumbre de no botar basura en las calles, de cerrar la llave al cepillarnos los dientes y bañarnos, así como plantar arbolitos.
Estoy participando en un reto que está promoviendo el banco donde trabajo (Bancentro), abrieron una cuenta bancaria para recaudar fondos hasta diciembre. El reto consiste en que todos ponemos dinero para ahorrar y crear un fondo, al final quien plante más arboles es el que se quedará con el fondo recolectado en la cuenta de ahorro. Esta iniciativa ha promovido la participación entre mis colegas de trabajo y a nivel personal, he involucrado a mis hermanos para que plantemos la mayor cantidad de árboles por mi vecindario.
Puedo decir que ICS cambio drásticamente mi vida, porque antes no cuidaba el planeta como ahora, no me preocupaba por botar basura en cualquier lugar, no plantaba ni un árbol, es más ni los regaba y peor no me informaba de ningún tema ambiental.
Ahora sí, me gusta leer, aprender, concientizar a la gente para que cuide el planeta, me gusta ver arboles cerca, los riego, siembro, aunque no me da tiempo, pero ahí estoy, aunque sea unos minutitos atendiendo esas plantitas.
Progressio ICS además de regalarme conocimientos, me regalo varias amistades de las cuales conservo comunicación.
