Film festival appeal: HIV and AIDS preventionIn the Monte Plata province of the Dominican Republic, women struggle for their families' survival. For a growing number of women, this struggle is exacerbated by their vulnerability to HIV and AIDS. Few women are able to access HIV tests, and for those who test positive, health care is totally inadequate – access to treatment and care is sporadic at best, and health workers are frustrated by their own limited skills and resources. Progressio is working with local NGOs and local authorities to improve the quality of life of these women. This project will contribute to the prevention of HIV and AIDS through community campaigns, and will improve treatment and care for positive women. Progressio is supporting local partners to put systems and services in place, and to train health workers - ensuring that all women in the area can access effective and consistent care. Progressio is also supporting women's groups to lobby authorities, legislators and other decision-makers, so that the health rights of women are protected for years to come. Progressio is delighted that Discovering Latin America has chosen to support our work with women affected by HIV and AIDS in the Dominican Republic by making Progressio the official beneficiary of their well-known film festival. Support our workYou can make a real difference to the lives of people in the Dominican Republic by supporting this and other Progressio projects in the 11 countries where we work. Progressio is an international development charity working for justice and the eradication of poverty.
