Acción Ecológica

Acción Ecológica is a environmental NGO which campaigns on a range of issues including, forests, oil, mining, biodiversity, genetically modified crops, costal ecosystems, agricultural toxins, ecological debt, free trade agreements and the privatization of water sources. Their forest campaign focuses on the protection of the forests from intensive wood extraction.

Germán Luebert Bruron is a Progressio development worker who is a specialist in geo-referencing information systems with environmental training. He is responsible for designing and putting in place a database of geo-reference information on the forests in danger in Ecuador and illegal logging in the country. This will serve to support advocacy and monitoring work and allow Acción Ecológica to denounce illegal activities at a national and international level.

Asociación Latinoamericana de Educación Radiofónica (ALER - Latin American Association of Radio Education)

ALER is a broadcasting association founded in 1972 by the directors of 18 radio schools in Latin America. It currently has a membership of 118 radio stations and popular communication centres from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries. ALER's aim is to promote participatory radio, to transmit the communities' words and to promote the ability of people at grassroots level to be 'popular reporters'.

Alexander Amézquita, a communications specialist from Colombia, is working as a Progressio development worker with ALER's Education and research team on communications training for radio networks.

CAMAREN - Foro de Recursos Hídricos

CAMAREN is a consortium of public and private entities which aims to contribute to the sustainable and fair management of Ecuador's renewable natural resources, including water, through training of technicians, community trainers and peasant farmers.

Silvina Gernaert, an Argentinean Development worker, is working with CAMAREN as a specialist in natural resource management in a team which coordinates and supports the National Water Resources Forum.

Coordinadora Ecuatoriana de Agroecología (CEA)

CEA is a network of organisations that promotes rural sustainable development and agroecology programmes in Ecuador. The network is one of three partner organisatsions working on a new Progressio project to help poor communities in the Ecuadorian Highlands to establish fair sustainable systems to manage water, land and seeds.

Myriam Salazar is working as a Progressio development worker at CEA. She is an agricultural engineer who previously worked as a Progressio development worker for 6 years with small scale farmers in the Dominican Republic on agroecological projects.

Centro de Estudios Pluriculturales (CEPCU - Centre for Pluricultural Studies)

CEPCU is a private, non-profit organisation which was established in 1992 by a group of indigenous profesionals. It works on projects to manage natural resources and to promote cultural regeneration and the use of traditional agricultural products. Its headquarters are in the town of Otavalo where a large part of the community is indigenous.

Rocío Sotelo, a development worker from Peru, is working with CEPCU on environmental education in local schools and communities.

Corporación Kimirina

Kimirina is a word in Quichua, one of the indigenous languages of Ecuador, which means 'solidarity', 'uniting to build together' and 'walking together until we get home'. The organisation works to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of people in Ecuador.

Progressio development worker Ana Teresa Rodriguez is working with Kimirina on a project that trains volunteers to support people living with HIV and AIDS. The project also runs training and capacity building workshops for women living with HIV and health professionals.

Fundación Mujer y Familia Andina (FUNDAMYF)

The Andean Woman and Family Foundation is an NGO which aims to promote sustainable development and equal gender ethnic and generational relations. They work with some of the most vulnerable groups in Ecuador. They work closely with local governments and support social organisations through participatory local development plans and micro regional development programs.
 
Progressio development worker Luisa Recchia is an Italian specialist in urban planning in vulnerable areas. She works with the canton (county) government in the northern province of Esmeraldas on a program of legalisation and reorganisation of neighbourhoods. In the city of Esmeraldas 65% of inhabitants do not have legal title to their land and there has been very little planning of housing development in the city making it difficult to provide people with services.

Grupo de Apoyo al Movimiento de Mujeres del Azuay (GAMMA)

The GAMMA foundation is an NGO which supports the women's movement in the Azuay Province. Among its key successes is the foundation of the Citizens' Observatory of Communication, which monitors and campaigns against media messages that reinforce discrimination against women. GAMMA also runs gender awareness training for health and education professionals and other individuals.

Sergio Vergne is a communications specialist from Argentina who is working as a Progressio Development Worker at GAMMA to strengthen the Citizens´ Observatory of Communication.

Instituto de Estudios Ecuatorianos (IEE - Institute of Ecuadorian Studies)

The Institute of Ecuadorian Studies is an NGO which aims to strengthen civil society participation in local development projects. Working closely with indigenous community organisations and women´s groups, it carries out training and workshops to improve people´s capacity to manage land, soil, water and seeds in a sustainable way.
 
Fernando Ruiz is a forestry engineer from Columbia working on a three year Progressio project to help marginalised communities in the Ecuadorian Highlands manage natural resources. The project has been funded by the Big Lottery and is being led by IEE and 2 other partner organisations.

Movimiento Indígena y Campesino de Cotopaxi - MICC

MICC is a political movement of indigenous people and small scale farmers in the Cotopaxi province of Ecuador. The organization campaigns for the rights of indigenous people and small scale farmers to have access to water, land, education, healthcare and housing.

Fernando Ruiz is a forestry engineer from Columbia who has been supporting MICC. He is now working on a three year Progressio project to help marginalised communities in the Ecuadorian Highlands manage natural resources.

Red Agroecológica del Austro

The Red Agroecológica del Austro is a network of organizations including NGOs, producers and state bodies based in Cuenca. The network works on Argroecology issues and supports local producers.

Juliette Mac Aleese is a Progressio development worker supporting the network to evaluate their support to producers from an environmental and economic perspective.

REDSIDAzuay

REDSIDAzuay is a network of five organisations from Ecuador's Azuay province which tackle HIV and AIDS from different perspectives. Through the network they work together on a joint approach to awareness raising, prevention, training and the provision of information, support and advice.

Pablo Soto is a Chilean journalist who works as a Progressio development worker supporting the network.

Social Pastoral Pedro Carbo

Social Pastoral works in the Guayaquil zone of Ecuador and since 1985 has been involved in the socio-economic development of the Pedro Carbo area. Its programme has three strands: health, education and production.

Progressio development worker Frederic Pinel gives support in the field of production, where the aim is to generate and improve the resources of peasant farmers, craftsmen and small businesses by offering credit lines, strengthening training processes and supporting the design and strengthening of microbusinesses.
