East Timor: Who Cares?

Show your solidarity with East Timor

On 31 August 1999 the East Timorese people committed a great act of collective bravery: despite intimidation and very real threats of violence, they overwhelmingly voted to sever ties with their occupier of 25 years, Indonesia. That was almost 10 years ago, and the whole world watched in awe at the bravery of the East Timorese. Now the struggles of the East Timorese have been largely forgotten and the nascent country has been left on its own to battle extreme poverty, sporadic violence and corruption.

In the run-up to the 10th anniversary of the vote for independence, the East Timorese and world community are preparing once again to remember and comemorate this act of bravery. World leaders will once again visit East Timor, and see the struggles of the people. The East Timorese are circulating a petition to these leaders asking for help, and they hope to have 100,000 signatures from each region of the country before August 31st.

In the UK we are circulating a parallel petition, calling on world leaders to once again work for justice and peace in East Timor. This country cannot remain forgotten and now is the time to remember it.

Sign the petition to show your support for East Timor by clicking on the 'East Timor Justice Petition' link below and completing our online form:
