31 Aug 2008 Legal Training Officer (two-year placement), based in Dili, Timor LesteYou will have a degree in Law; a minimum of three years of experience in legal research and analysis and conceptualisation of legislation; at least three years of experience in developing countries, working with local NGOs, and in developing and delivering staff training on legal matters.
You will have good understanding of the complexity of legal issues and impunity threats in a post-conflict and / or recently independent country; ability to transfer skills and knowledge, an understanding of capacity building techniques and methods, and good knowledge of gender issues.
Excellent self-organising and prioritising skills; good interpersonal and communications skills; good team building skills and consensus-led approach to work;a willingness to learn Tetum and/or Bahasa Indonesian; willingness to rapidly orient yourself in the Timorese legal system and familiarise yourself with Timorese laws are all essential.
Ideally you should have a postgraduate qualification in Human Rights, and / or International Law, or experience in the field of international human rights law. Experience of: producing legal materials for easy reading and awareness building/raising; developing, implementing and monitoring advocacy campaigns/activities; working effectively in a resource poor environment where access to technology is limited, and of working in a post-conflict setting are highly desirable. Tact, determination and a clear and strategic approach to coalition building in a politicised environment; knowledge of Tetum and/or Bahasa Indonesia, and knowledge of Portuguese are also highly desirable.
