The human cost of illegal logging

The impact on the lives of poor and marginalised communities in the South. A three-part briefing from activists from the North and the global South

A representative of a grassroots community in Honduras and London-based campaigners report on the devastating effects of illegal logging on people and the environment in communities in the South - and ask what can be done to bring it to a stop.

Speakers representing three leading international development organisations will explain why it is important to tackle illegal logging, the damage it is causing to communities, the potential conflict that may arise as a result, and what civil society and government must do to improve the situation. They will present their ideas in an interactive way, including the presentation of a short documentary made by one of the organisations. The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session open to all.

Speakers

• Francisco Hernandez (Progressio Development Worker in Honduras)
• Estela Maradiaga (representative of CAM - the Environmental Movement of Campamento - in Honduras)
• David Young (Head of Independent Forest Monitoring)
• Julian Newman (Head of Forests Campaigns)
