Progressio - Changing Minds, Changing Lives

23 Oct 2008

Discovering Latin America Film Festival - Pre-Festival Charity Screening

The Year My Parents Went On Vacation
Dir. Cao Hamburger / Brazil

Time: 19:30
Location: Odeon Covent Garden
Tickets: £10 - £7 consessions
DATE: 23rd of October

This multi-layered film recounts the story of 12 year old Mauro and is set in 1970, when Brazil seems to have been turned upside-down. But Mauro's concerns have nothing to do with the military regime that controls the country; rather, his biggest dream is to see Brazil become three-time winners of the World Cup. When his left-wing militant parents are forced underground, Mauro is taken to live in the strange but colourful Jewish and Italian community of Bom Retiro in São Paulo. It is during the long wait for a call from his parents, that Mauro's own journey of self-discovery begins.

The film has won many international awards, including: the Audience Award at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, in 2006; the Special Jury Award for the Best Fictional Film, at the São Paulo International Film Festival in 2006; the award for the Best Music at the Havana International Film Festival in 2007; and was part of the Official Selection at last year's Berlin Film Festival.

More details of the screening.

The festival is supporting Progressio's campaign to help women in the Dominican Republic with HIV and AIDS.
