5 Nov 2008 The Challenge of CoexistenceYou are invited to a screening of The Challenge of Coexistence, a documentary film on Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic, followed by a talk by Edwin Paraison, former Haitian consul to the Dominican Republic, and a discussion chaired by Lord Leslie Griffiths, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Haiti. The Challenge of Coexistence was directed by Progressio development worker Tigu Guimarães and interrogates the background, conditions, economics and the multi-faceted results of Haitian migration to the Dominican Republic. Consisting mainly of interviews with local academics, members of the Dominican business community and migrants themselves, it touches on many of the difficulties that have accompanied Haitian migration from early in the 20th century to the present day. The film concludes with a look at various options for change which could facilitate a more harmonious future in Hispaniola. Following the film Mr Edwin Paraison will give a talk on bi-national relations on Hispaniola and specific issues surrounding Haitian migration into the Dominican Republic. Mr Paraison has extensive knowledge of this topic through his experience as a Haitian consul to the Dominican Republic. These presentations will be followed by a question and answer session open to all, chaired by Lord Griffiths. DetailsWednesday 5 November 2008 at 6pm |
