6 Jul 2009 A photographic exhibition hosted by Paul Goggins MP, documenting the daily struggle for justice by the people of East Timor, one of the world’s newest and poorest nations.East Timor: Who Cares? Photography ExhibitionThese striking photos by renowned documentary photographer, Marcus Perkins, commemorate the 10th anniversary of the popular consultation for independence in 1999 and is part of Progressio’s campaign, East Timor: Who Cares? The campaign seeks to promote international discussion of the two major reports on reconciliation in East Timor and support for local justice initiatives. Nearly a decade after the ballot, East Timor, one of the 10 poorest nations in the world, remains a fractured country, driven by a cyclical climate of violence that stems from the occupation. There are proposals in East Timor for a Justice Centre where people can access support, including counselling, legal advice and assistance in prosecutions. With UK support, such a centre could improve East Timorese access to a range of options promoting reconciliation. Details:The photographs will be on display for one week at the House of Commons from 6-10 July 2009.The exhibition is not open to the public, but if you are interested in attending the launch event on Monday 6 July at 3.30pm please contact esther@progressio.org.uk. |
