In 2016, Pope Francis invites us to take part in the Year of Mercy, an opportunity to reflect on how we ourselves might better reflect the love and mercy of God in our world. Progressio’s response to this invitation has been ZimFare and ZimFast.

Archbishop Malcolm McMahon endorsed the campaign in Liverpool Archdiocese by co-hosting a ZimFare and ZimFast event in Liverpool this Lent. Guest speakers included British screenwriter and novelist Frank Cottrell-Boyce & family, who took on a similar fasting fundraising challenge last year and raised £1700 for Progressio. Archbishop Malcolm said, "I am endorsing this campaign as I care passionately about social justice and Progressio's work. By taking these simple actions we can empathise closely with the people in Zimbabwe. Your support could make a significant difference, not just because of the funds raised, but because it will give hope to people who most need it." Archbishop Malcolm encourages all parishes within the archdiocese to host a ZimFare meal on a large parish scale before 15 May.

How can I take part in ZimFare?

  • Cook: Cook a simple Zimbabwean meal for friends or for your parish using one of our ZimFare recipes. Be bold - the more the merrier!
  • Pray/Quiz: Pray for the peace and dignity of people living in Zimbabwe, and/or host our African-themed ZimFare Quiz over your ZimFare meal to create an entertaining evening and to encourage guests to think about the challenges facing people living in poverty.
  • Give: Tell guests about Progressio's work and ask them to give a regular or one-off donation to Progressio.

How can I take part in ZimFast?

  • Cook: Use our ZimFast Meal Plan (see below) to create a daily diet and then fast by living on this repetitive Zimbabwean diet for 6 days.
  • Pray: Pray for peace and dignity for those living in Zimbabwe, and for the work of Progressio around the world.
  • Give: Encourage family and friends to sponsor you for giving up your usual varied diet and taking a small glimpse into some of the challenges faced by people living in poverty.
