ICS Nicaragua

Michael Martínez is originally from the La Sabanita community. She volunteered with Progressio ICS Nicaragua in 2015 (cycle 12). Michael took on the community liaison role in her team, one she performed perfectly. She helped the Santos Sánchez Cerda School and the community to host us and allocate the timetables for us to deliver our capacity building activities with the students. She set up an alliance with the local Catholic Church, allowing us to build a community allotment.

En esta semana hicimos la visita al grupo de voluntarios del Bramadero en la cual hubo muchas actividades. Recorrimos las casas hospederas de los voluntarios británicos, comimos pizza, y jugamos fútbol. Se realizó un juego llamado “el tesoro escondido” que se trataba de conocer un poco más de la comunidad del Bramadero. También Peter bailó con un perro y nos bañó de agua en la cruzada de un pequeño rio. 

Many myths, legends and superstitions have grown up surrounding the town of El Bramadero and have been passed down from generation to generation, becoming cemented over time in the community’s beliefs and traditions. For this week’s blog, we thought we would delve into the history of El Bramadero and share with you a few of our favourite myths and stories from the community. 

El Caballo Negro

We’re coming to the end of our third week here in El Bramadero and you may be wondering what we’ve been up to since we arrived. Now that we’ve acclimatised and settled into our daily routines we thought it was about time we talk you through a typical day in the life of a Progressio volunteer. 

This week’s activities revolved around eco-stoves, from beneficiary training and advice, to construction of the eco-stoves.

The weather added a challenge to successfully completing these actions, however it was clear the UK and Nicaraguan volunteers were definitely up to the task.

Estuvimos en Darayli en casa de Itza por la mañana. Los nicaragüenses recibimos clases de inglés, mientras los chicos Británicos recibieron sus clases de español. La promotora Elizabeth de ASOMUPRO nos impartió dos entrenamientos, uno sobre las eco-estufas y otro sobre los eco-hornos, y se abordaron los aspectos técnicos de cada infraestructura, sus beneficios y datos específicos para que iniciemos la construcción.

El comienzo de esta semana fue súper especial ya que se castigó a dos voluntarios por llegar tarde al centro de reunión - pero el castigo no fue muy fuerte y a uno de ellos le pidieron que hiciera veinte pechadas y a la otro diez sentadillas. Continuo de eso, la clase de inglés estuvo muy participativa y todos los/as chicos/as nos involucramos de una forma muy buena. Este día lo pasamos en casa de la voluntaria Yeudi. Fuimos a las casas de las beneficiarias a invitarlas a una charla de eco-estufas e informarles que ese mismo día se entregaría los materiales. 

Two events were held this week; 1) a climate change talk, and 2) an afternoon dedicated to young girls, known as El Dia de la Niña.

We were particularly enthused about the International Day of the Girl Child as it seemed clear to us this community has a different attitude towards women and children in general. This is not to say it is a bad view, but just different to the attitudes expressed and experienced in the West.

El día jueves 13 de octubre del 2016, a las 2 pm, se compartió en la comunidad de la Grecia una charla sobre el cambio climático donde asistieron nueve personas, ocho mujeres y un varón. En dicha charla se les dio información sobre las causas, consecuencias y lo que se debe hacer para adaptarse al calentamiento global. Durante la charla tres participantes brindaron sus opiniones acerca de los problemas climáticos en la comunidad. Por ejemplo, en las comunidades de la Grecia y Parcila los habitantes nos dicen que la sequía es uno de los problemas causados por el cambio climático.

‘The poor are always with us’; look on the news to see the displaced in refugee camps, pass a homeless person in the street, open emails to find another campaign desperate for donations to end poverty. It’s easy to think that poverty, defined as the severe lack of material possessions or money, will be a stain on human consciousness forever. Luckily, there’s no room for this kind of pessimism on 17 October, which marks the UN’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
