ICS Nicaragua

You’re staring down your last ten days in El Bramadero and the last two months have been eye-opening to say the least. In true Progressio style it is now time for some reflection.

Porque esto es el futuro nuestro

Haciendo filtro eco-estufa y pila

Que bien se mira ahora Parcila

Con el centro de salud haciendo alianza

Una mañana muy activa nos reunimos este lunes lleno de muchas energías, empezamos a construir las ultimas cuatro eco-estufas que a un nos faltaban, aunque un poco agotador por el día muy caluroso, logramos terminarlas emocionadamente.

Poetry is a big deal in Nicaragua, whenever we have met up with the other ICS team in Parcila, the Nica or the UK volunteers would read us a poem, which they have composed themselves. This therefore inspired some of the El Bram UK volunteers to dig really deep to find the creative juices within themselves, and write some poetry. 

El dia lunes, buen inicio de semana, empezamos como siempre las clases de inglés y español y luego nos reunimos en grupos para empezar la construcción de eco-hornos. También terminamos con la siembra de árboles y a las 4 PM organizamos el juego de chicas de voleibol.

El dia martes por la mañana organizamos dos grupos, un grupo para construcción de eco-hornos, otro grupo para deshacer hornos viejos. Luego por la tarde organizamos dos grupos para construir y para sacar encuestas en la comunidad.

The climate, the noises, the smells, the bugs; these were the kind of things we thought would be a challenge before coming out here. Something I didn’t expect to be such a big adjustment was the food. From rice and beans (the bread and butter of Nicaragua), to the inevitable tortilla served with every meal or the tangy taste of the local cheese, Cuajada, all things culinary in Nicaragua have been a discovery in their own right.

El día domingo fue de maravilla, muy contentos nos preparábamos para conocer El Bramadero, un lindísimo pueblo enclavado en un verde valle. Allí nos estaban esperando el resto de nuestros compañeros de Progressio ICS para enseñarnos su comunidad y el trabajo que habían realizado. Nos dio gusto ver el reconocimiento que tienen los voluntarios en El Bramadero. Este viaje de intercambio fue muy oportuno porque nos permitió compartir como equipo fuera de la rutina en Parcila y conocer otras zonas de nuestro país. 

It’s been a week of all things new in Parcila. There was much excitement on Monday when a two-metre-high cardboard box, sitting on a wooden cart pulled by two heaving bulls came into town. The monstrosity was unloaded and sat clumsily in the living room as we stood in anticipation waiting for the grand unveiling. As news of the new box spread, the living room started to fill with ardent viewers, all giggling and smirking cheesily. 

“Es muy bonito.” “It's very pretty” were the comments when the new contraption was finally revealed. 

Empezando la semana con mucha energía y felices de entregar a cada familia beneficiada los materiales para la construcción de las eco-estufas, poco a poco se observa como el volcán de arena desaparecía. Entre risas, sudor y muchas poses para las fotos, todos los voluntarios nicas y británicos ayudaban a las familias a empacar y cargar. Cada familia utilizaba distintos transportes para trasladar los materiales, mientras unos utilizaron camionetas rentadas, carretillas, otros traían sus caballitos o carreta jalada por bueyes.
